Description: This painting shows the Isle of Man Steam Packet company's vessel 'Mona's Isle' leaving Douglas, around 1835. It was painted by the maritime artist Samuel Walters.
In the picture 'Mona's Isle' heads out into an almost impossibly choppy sea. Smoke billows from her funnel and the three legs device is clearly visible on her paddlebox. From her foremast she flies the 'Blue Peter' indicating she is leaving harbour.
'Mona's Isle' was the first paddle steamer purchased by the fledgling Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. She was built in 1830 by John Wood of Glasgow, and her engines were built by Robert Napier of the same city. She was small but powerful, and could make the crossing to Liverpool in eight hours.
Samuel Walters was a leading British marine artist, known for his paintings of naval battles during the nineteenth century. He studied at the Liverpool School of Marine Art and specialised in ship portraiture. He is generally considered one of the most enduring figures of the Liverpool School of Marine Art. Walters enjoyed the patronage of King William IV.
