Biography: R. Cottier at V. Pleigniers. Formerly butler to Dr. Dixon of King William's College, Isle of Man. (said to be the Mr. "Carter" of Eric (Farrer's).At the time of the College fire in 1844, Cottier, according to tradition, rode into Douglas for help in 20 minutes. He was a good horseman and when he was first butler to Dr. Dixon he cooly entered his masters' horse (without leave of course) for the Langness races and won! A feat which nearly cost him his place.
