Biography: John Thomas Kinley was born at Castletown, and was the son of Captain James Kinley, a merchant mariner. In August 1917 John was a member of the crew of the SS Sonnie, on a voyage from Spain to Swansea and captained by his father. The vessel was torpedoed by U-boat and eight of the twenty four crew were lost, the survivors being picked up by a French patrol boat. Captain Kinley had to report that among the drowned was his own son. His body was not recovered. (Image ref: PG/13743/50).
