Biography: Born in Douglas in 1902, Edward Brew was too young to serve in the First World War, but like many such young men who just missed the conflict, he sought adventure in post-war flash points. From 1918 onwards, Ireland had become largely ungovernable as nationalists fought for independence. Faced with large scale resignations, the Royal Irish Constabulary recruited outside of Ireland. Several young Manxmen joined its ranks in 1920, Brew among them. This was the era of the Black and Tans, and Brew would have seen considerable danger. He returned home safely, only to die competing in the 1923 Manx Grand Prix. (Image ref: PG/8642).
