Biography: Hugh McAllister Allan-Black, of Castletown, was educated at King William's College. He volunteered to join the army in June 1917, and was posted to the 9th battalion, Royal Fusiliers. He was in hospital for some months before proceeding to France, and was offered a medical discharge from the army, but chose not to accept it. He was killed in action at the Battle of Amiens, on 8 August 1918, the so-called 'Black Day of the German Army'. On this day the allies began finally to drive the Germans back in the 'Battles of the 100 days'. (Image ref: PG/13743/3).
