Biography: Herbert Taggart was the son of Isabella Margaret Quayle, of Gob y Volley, Lezayre, and James Taggart, a draper, of Castletown. He was commissioned into the 15th (London Welsh) battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and served on the Western Front. In May 1916, he was involved in a night raid on the German trenches opposite the lines of his battalion. On the return across No Man's Land, he saw an officer with a wounded man. As he tried to assist, Taggart was shot in the back. The raiding party was forced to leave him in No Man's Land, seriously wounded. He was discovered by a German patrol, but died of his wounds as a prisoner of war. He is commemorated on the Loos memorial to the missing. (Image ref: PG/13743/39).
