Biography: William McHarrie was born in Castletown, and was a noted footballer for Castletown AFC. After serving an apprenticeship with Dodds the grocers, he emigrated to South Africa around 1910. He was running a grocery business there until the outbreak of war, when he enlisted in the South African Infantry. He was fighting in German East Africa when he was severely wounded, and died on 1 April 1916. He is buried in Voi Cemetery, near Mombassa, Kenya. (Image ref: PG/13743/45).
