Biography: John E. Quayle lived at 53 Arbory Street, Castletown. During the First World War he worked as an Able Seaman aboard the steamer Spectator which was torpedoed in 1917 off the coast of southern Ireland, whilst returning from South Africa to Liverpool. Whilst the ship was sunk, all of the crew managed to escape. Quayle had previously received a payment from the Naval Prize Fund, awarded when the Spectator rammed and sank a U-boat. He died at home in September 1919. (Image ref: PG/13743/53).
