George H. Kelly

Epithet: Soldier in the Manchester Regiment

Record type: First World War Biographies

Town / Village residence: Castletown

Biography: George Hedley Kelly first enlisted in the Isle of Man Volunteers but subsequently transferred to the Manchester Regiment. He was posted to the 1st battalion, which was then in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq). Kelly was wounded and taken prisoner by the Turks on 2 March 1916, during the British army's attempts to break through to the town of Kut-al-Amara. Treatment of British prisoners by the Turks was poor, and it took over a year for word to reach his family that Kelly had died in July 1916. He was 19 years old, and is remembered on the Basra memorial to the missing. (Image ref: PG/13743/68).
