Matthew McCauley

Epithet: Soldier in the Manchester Regiment

Record type: First World War Biographies

Biography: Matthew McCauley was born in Douglas, and grew up at 15 Big Well Street. During the First World War he volunteered to join the 11th battalion Manchester Regiment, one of the battalions of 'Kitchener's Army' raised for war service. He was killed in action during the Third Battle of Ypres in the autumn of 1917. This battle, also known as Passchendaele, was one of the worst in terms of conditions - continual shelling turned the battlefield into a moonscape full of flooded shellholes, and soldiers could drown in the mud if they fell into one.
