Henry William Madoc

Epithet: Commandant of Douglas Internment Camp

Record type: First World War Biographies

Biography: Lieutenant Colonel Henry William Madoc was born at Malvern, Worcestershire. After service in the Boer War, and a spell as Assistant Inspector in the South African Constabulary, he came to the Isle of Man in July 1911 as Chief Constable. In 1914 he was seconded from his role at the head of the Isle of Man Constabulary to take charge of the Island's first internment camp, at Douglas. His knowledge of the camps established by the British in South Africa to intern Boer civilians would no doubt have been a factor in his appointment. He retired from the police in 1936, and died the following year. (Image ref: PG/7684).
