Biography: Cyril Corlett was born in Douglas. At the outbreak of the First World War, through family connections he and his brother were able to secure commissions as officers. Cyril was commissioned into the Tyneside Scottish, being posted to France in 1916. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Arras in 1917, and was medically discharged from the army as a result. However he volunteered his services a second time, and was posted as an officer to the British intervention forces in North Russia, serving with a white Russian battalion. In 1919 he was caught up in the Onega Mutiny, and handed over to the Bolsheviks. He remained a prisoner of war in Moscow until 1920. (Image ref: PG/7629/2).
