Biography: Fred Cubbon of Balladoole, Arbory was before the First World War a gardener at Lorne House. He joined the Army Service Corps after the outbreak of war and spent some time at the army transport depot, Blackheath, where he was an instructor in wagon drill. In October 1918 he was part of a draft sent to North Russia, where the British army was becoming embroiled in the Russian Civil War. Cubbon landed at Murmansk, where a British force was guarding supplies originally intended for the Tsarist army. Cubbon died of pneumonia on 22 October 1918, and is buried in Murmansk New British Cemetery. (Image ref: PG/13743/57).
