Biography: John Connock was the son of a retired soldier who was employed at Castle Rushen. He joined the army in 1909, and upon the outbreak of the First World War was serving in India with the 1st battalion Manchester Regiment. He returned to Europe with the Indian Expeditionary Force, which comprised British and Indian battalions withdrawn from garrison duty. Connock was killed in action in France on 12 November 1914, in heavy fighting around La Bassee. (Image ref: PG/13743/72).
