Omobono Tenni

Record type: Motorsport Biographies

Biography: Senior - Guzzi

Age 43, Omobono Tenni, famous Italian racer on two wheels and form, first raced on the Island in 1935, on a Guzzi in the Lightweight. On his initial appearance he showed his form, and at the end of the fourth lap was running second to his team-mate Stanley Woods, with just over a minute between them. Then on the fifth lap he crashed at Creg-Ny-Baa, and retired.

An absentee from the I.o.M in 1936, he returned in ’37 to ride a Guzzi in both Lightweight and Senior. In the former he was running again in second to Stanley Woods on the fourth lap – this time only 26 seconds behind. He retained this position on the next lap and on the sixth lap passed his famous team-mate (who retired shortly after) and won at a record speed of 74.72 m.p.h. also annexing the lap record at 77.72 m.p.h.

In the Senior of the following Friday, Omobono showed his ability to handle the big stuff. He was on the Leader Board of the second, third and fourth laps, his average speed at the end of lap four being 84.61 m.p.h. Soon after this he retired.

Gave the Island a miss in 1938, but was back in 1939 in the Lightweight. Led on the first lap but dropped back a place on the second, and retired in the third. Is one of the most “fancied” riders for this year’s Senior.
