Biography: William Frederick Ross, from Hilary Park in Douglas, was living in Canada before the First World War, and enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Winnipeg in December 1914. He was posted to France where he served with a Canadian Trench Mortar Battery. In April 1917 he took part in the storming of Vimy Ridge by the Canadian Corps, one of the most spectacular Allied successes on the Western Front. Ross was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in this action; even though he was wounded in the head he returned across captured ground, under fire, to look for ammunition parties which had become lost.
