Biography: Edgar Alexander Cowin was the youngest of six brothers, who grew up in a house on Derby Square in Douglas. He joined the army aged 16, and was posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery. This branch of the Royal Artillery operated heavy siege guns, and Edgar qualified as a gun layer, meaning it was he who was responsible for sighting the weapon. He served overseas from 1918.
