Age 26, Werner Haas, from Augsburg, Germany is the reigning World Champion in both the 125 c.c. and 250 c.c. classes. He is a relative newcomer to motor-cycle racing, and first gained prominence in the 125 c.c. class of the 1952 German Grand Prix, in which he took his N.S.U into the lead on the last lap and won from Carlo Ubbiali by just over one second. In the 1952 Grand Prix of Nations at Monza, Werner again rode brilliantly, finishing in second place behind Lorenzetti—but so close upon his tail that the timekeepers speeds and times of the pair as identical. A few days later he rode in the International Six Days Trial in Austria, but retired on the fourth day.

He started the 1953 season in fine style by winning both 125 c.c. and 250 c.c. races at Hockenheim, and followed this by finishing second to Fergus Anderson in the Lightweight T.T., and second to the late Les Graham in the 125 c.c. race—and this on his first visit to the Island!

The remainder of his triumphal progress through the “championship” meetings can be summed up as follows: Dutch T.T., first in both 125 c.c. and 250 c.c. races, making record laps in both; Ulster Grand Prix, first in 125 c.c. and second in 250 c.c. race; Grand Prix of Nations, first in 125 c.c. race (making record lap), and second in 250 c.c. Not bad for a “novice”!
