Scope & Content: On the right is the Falcon’s Nest hotel. It was built to the designs of Mr Horne, an architect of Liverpool, in 1860-61 and was originally called ‘The Port Erin Castle Hotel’. To the left is William Milner’s house, ‘The Rest’, later called ‘York House’. Beyond that is St Catherine’s Church. The foundation stone was laid on 12 December 1878 and was complete within five months. The architect was James Cowle of Douglas and the builders were R. Moore and James Costain. This photograph shows the church in its original state. In 1894 it was extended seawards to provide more accommodation for the visitors during the summer and at the same time a new tower with entrance below was added. The last property on the left was the Villa Marina, sometimes called the Marina Hotel. As new hotels were built on the upper promenade, mostly to the designs of George Kay, this building was greatly altered to become The Eagle Hotel. Beneath this building and to the left is the terrace of houses paid for by William Milner which were let to working people. The rent, after paying for repairs, was to be used to pay for a curate for Rushen.
