Scope & Content: This is the type of scene described by T.E. Brown, the Manx national poet, in his poetry of the little garden in front of the cottage and the ducks and the hens. This photograph was taken at Port St Mary down under Bay View Road and the High Street on what is now the path linking Chapel Bay and the Harbour. On the left is Maggie Brew whilst her son Tom sits on the rough formed bench and just watches. In Steven Dearden and Ken Hassell’s book they advise that his nickname was Sullivan. He was a fisherman who also carried visitors luggage from the railway station to their hotel. He is supposed on one occasion to have been tipped a sovereign but not having seen or had one before mistakenly told people he had been given a ‘Sullivan’. In the centre of the picture can be seen the cast iron column of a public lamp which was of the oil lamp variety.
