Captain Colin William Lindsay Royal Navy

Date(s): 1865

Scope & Content: Formal studio portrait in naval uniform.

Administration / Biographical History: Lindsay was a half pay naval officer (rank of Captain RN) who for several years was Coast Guard Inspections Lieutenant based in Douglas until his death on Christmas Day 1865. In the 1861 census he was aged 50 living at 74 Love Lane, Douglas with his wife, Helen Jane (both born in England). In the 1863 Thwaites Directory he was living at 2 Auckland Terrace, Douglas, the place of his death. He was buried in Braddan churchyard on 29 December 1865 aged 56 years, leaving a will (1866 Archdiaconal number 6) and all to his widow. She died at 40 Derby Square, Douglas in 1896.

Lindsay's funeral service was reported in the Manx Sun, early in January 1866L 'THE LATE COMMANDER LINDSAY.—On Sunday morning the Rev. S. Simpson preached an impressive funeral sermon in St. Thomas's Church upon the death of Commander Lindsay. It seems that for some time past that officer's health had been in a precarious state, but lately he had rallied to such an extent that his friends had cheering hopes of his complete restoration. On Christmas Day he attended service at St. Thomas's, apparently in much better health than usual. He remained to the communion service, which did not terminate until one o'clock, and before four the same afternoon he was summoned out of time into eternity. As the Rev. Mr Simpson touchingly remarked, "The last remnant of strength which God gave him was devoted to the service of Him by whom it was bestowed." ' (Manx Sun 6 January 1866).

An entry from the Bristish Naval Dictionary in 1849 states 'Colin William Lindsay passed his examination in 1827; obtained his commission 10 Jan 1837; and was afterwards appointed- 8 Feb 1837, to the RUSSELL 74, Capt. Sir Wm. Henry Dillon, employed in the Mediterranean and off Lisbon-8 April, 1839 to the CURACOA 24, Capt. Jenkin Jones, fitting for the South American station, whence he returned home and was paid off at the close of 1842-and 23 Feb.1844 to the AMERICA50, Capt. Hon. John Gordon, attached to the force in the Pacific. He left the latter ship on her arrival in England in 1846; and is at present on half-pay'.
