'Laxey Glen Gardens. Proposals for Rejuvenation and Redevelopment'.

Date(s): April 2007

Creator(s): Owens, David

Scope & Content: Illustrated report in which the author sets out suggestions for a scheme that might implement changes to the boating lake, playgrounds, croquet lawn, bandstand, pavilion, flower beds, dance floor, bowling green and glen. A stated purpose of the report is to engender discussion and act as a stimulus for the redevelopment of Laxey Glen Gardens, formerly a major attraction within the village while the varied aims of the rejuvenation proposals include supporting any future application to register Laxey as a World Heritage Centre. Owens proposes a joint committee to oversee the project with representatives from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Laxey Village Commissioners, Lonan Parish Commissioners and Maughold Parishioners and volunteers himself to co-ordinate the project and provide the necessary financial controls. He envisages control on completion of the project would be passed to a Garff Joint Initiative Committee. In his closing remarks the author states that 2008, being the 140th anniversary of Laxey Glen Gardens, would be a timely target date by which to rejuvenate this area.
