Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'Circa 1882? Spitting Club there, with raised platform (in front of Lifeboat House) whereon Handley's Bowling Green Band meet to play in there off hours. 'O, Joe, the boat is going over to'. Also scene of the Dr Oldham episode. Story. SS Centenary 1881. Mrs Firth's house and garden where Church Rd houses are in the picture. Probably 1884 or later. The Lifeboat house and platform were there in 1881 (Lebu date) and earlier. The SS Schools sang for Mrs Firth in her garden. Barnes' cottage on R in the V Marina wall. The Rev Barnes married Katie Davis, (Aunt of Mrs Kitto Kensington Rd) who lived in my present premises in Windsor Rd where I have been for 42 years (1935). They went to New Zealand, and in the Summer of 1934, Mrs Kitto brought in Katie's daughter, from NZ. Katie deceased, and her daughter wanted to see and photograph the old house her Mother had so often talked about. Around 1874 Katie used to shew me the pictures in the 'Leisure Hour' and 'Sunday at Home' on stormy Sunday afternoons in the 'parlour'. For over 40 years my dispensary, and on winter days I often hear the wind howl in the chimney as it did all those years ago'.
