Date(s): 7 January 1984

Creator(s): Kenyon, John Stowell

Scope & Content: Stowell Kenyon notes that he has received a copy of Mr Cook 's letter from the Director of the Manx Museum and adds his thanks for providing information regarding Reverend Hugh Ralph (1801-1854), husband of Mary Blake.

Stowell writes, ‘…”Aunt Ralph” who lived at The Grove after her husband’s death, is a very real character and participant in the story, but of necessity little was told me of her husband’. He continues 'I want to put on record with the Gibb Papers in the Museum what you have to tell. Hence I record it below. The Reverend Hugh Ralph MA (Glasgow) LLD (1827). Born 1801, 5th son of James Ralph, Artificer of Marylebone, London. Minister of Oldham Street, Church of Scotland, Liverpool, 1824. This was Duncan Gibb's church. Met Mary Blake and married her 27th June 1825. Left Liverpool 24th February 1842. Minister for Aberdour and Dalgetty, Fife until his death on 9th September 1854 aged 53.' Stowell quotes the inscription on the clock in the Drawing Room at the Grove which reads, 'Presented to Mrs Mary Ralph by a number of the parishioners of the neighbouring parish of Inverkeithing on the occasion of her leaving Dalgetty as a token of sympathy with her in her sudden bereavement and of respect and gratitude for the lively interest manifested by her late husband in the spiritual prosperity of the Parish during the late vacancy. Inverkeithing 27th October 1854.'
