'Lioar dy Carvalyn'

Scope & Content: Volume of handwritten carvals copied by William Bell of Port St Mary when aged 23, with inserted biographical notes by J Bell on the inside of the front cover
Administration / Biographical History: William Bell was born on 17 May 1835. Educated at Port St Mary Day School and Castletown Grammar School, he became a school teacher, later moving to St Bees College, Cumberland. According to J Bell, William could read, write and speak in eleven languages. He was first Curate and then Vicar of St John's Dickinfield and Chaplain tothe Bishop of Manchester. He died on 27 January 1875, aged 39 years and was buried in St John's churchyard, Dickinfield.
