First World War internee Johann Heinrich Detlef, Knockaloe Camp, Isle of Man

Scope & Content: The identification of Johann Heinrich Detlef is based upon the prisoner number 25290 which is marked on the glass plate, and comparison with the hospital and repatriation lists on the ICRC website. His Red Cross information bureau number was 92507. His home address was: Hamburg Hammerlandstr. 47. It is noted that he previously appeared on a list with bureau number 331C which indicated that he was interned in the British Empire. In fact he first appears on a Gibraltar list. His Red Cross index card is noted: 'parti de Fernando Poo [the island now known as Bioko off the coast of west Africa] arrete entre La Palma et Teneriffa' indicating that his ship was intercepted by the Royal Navy in the Canary Islands.
