Rheast Lane Peel

Date(s): Early 20th Century

Place made: Peel

Scope & Content: Once part of the main route east out of Peel from the market place next to St Peter’s Church, now replaced by Douglas Street and Tynwald Road. The whitewashed house on the left is Ballacotch, whilst the roofless building is the birthplace of Philip Christian (c. 1593-1654), a weaver who made his fortune in London. He became prominent in the Clothworkers’ Company, one of London’s famous guilds of craftsmen. Income from property he owned in London was used to enhance education in Peel – even today the primary school is known as Peel Clothworkers. Philip Christian’s birthplace is now a protected ancient monument.
