Scope & Content: Track 1: Manx woman (b.1932) from Laxey talks to Violet Ritchie about her childhood in the Isle of Man during the Second World War. She talks about her father; people staying in her parents boarding house in Laxey during the war including soldiers’ wives and women from French colonies; learning French; her parents' Laxey village shop and bakery supplying bread to internment camps; unemployment in the Isle of Man in the 1950s and 1960s and arrival of finance sector; her travelling to school on trains and trams; talking to internees; women doing jobs; travel after the war and holiday visitors returning.
Track 2: She continues to talk about other people's impressions of the Isle of Man; visitors impressions of the island. She then returns to recalling her wartime memories including petrol shortage; gas masks; ID checks, the blackout; Home Guard; bombers flying over; RAF airports; ships in the Irish Sea during the Second World War and Fleetwood as the port for the Isle of Man Steam Packet.
