Administration / Biographical History: Designed by architect G Temperley from Manchester, England, the Strand Cinema opened its doors to the public on 26 June 1913. During the Second World War the cinema was taken over by the Palace and Derby Castle Co. Ltd after being owned and managed by the Strand Cinema Co. Ltd.
In 1945 a fire caused the cinema to close for several months for repairs. In the 1960s the cinema closed its doors and the premises became an amusement arcade until 1968 when only part of the building was reopened as a cinema. The circle seating area became a cinema whilst the stalls remained as an amusement arcade. The cinema finally closed on 12 May 1988, its last feature film being ‘Empire of the Sun’ starring Christian Bale. The arcade remained open until that itself was closed in the early 1990s.
You can still see the architecture of the old Strand Cinema on the Strand Street elevation although the lower section of the building has been demolished and the current premises house a T K Maxx store (35-43 Strand Street).
