Sir Clement Le Neve Foster, Chief Inspector of Mines, Foxdale Mines

Date(s): late 19th century

Scope & Content: The photograph was taken down Foxdale Mines. Thick timbers are used as pit props. Notice the candle held on the hat by a lump of clay.

Foster died from the after effects of carbon monoxide poisoning in 1904 received in the Snaefell Mine.

Administration / Biographical History: After this image appeared in Manx Millenium part 8 in August 1999 (page 6) an anonymous member of the public left a pencilled note in the library which read, "Pipe overhead is AIR COMPRESSOR PIPE leading compressed air to tools used in excavating and drilling. Almost incidentally, it provided breathable air to the miners. Gt Laxey mine had the same system. In 1973 I saw it in the MAIN ADIT there".
