The Manx Sketch Book

Date(s): 1825

Scope & Content: In 1825 T. Ashe, a resident of Douglas, published "The Manx Sketchbook". It contains twelve lithographs copied from sketches, some of those by Lady Sarah Murray, the wife of Bishop George Murray. The printing and binding was undertaken by Mr J. Penrice of the Manx Rising Sun Office, North Quay, Douglas.

"About a mile from Kirk Michael stands the Episcopal residence, called Bishop's Court. It is pleasantly situated, shaded by a grove of trees, and watered by a beautiful stream which passes through a delightful shrubbery and flower garden. The present Bishop, the Hon. and Right Rev. George Murray, has modernised the house, and expended large sums of money to render it comfortable. Though not very commanding in appearance, it possesses every desirable appendage; the gardens and walks manifest infinite taste, and the detached offices are at once extensive and convenient. There is a small chapel annexed to the house. It has also been rebuilt, or modernised, in a style not less appropriate and admirable than that of the dwelling house and other structures." (T. Ashe, The Sketch Book, or Beauties of The Isle of Man, 1825, M 03052)
