Notebook of John Tiffin, a Douglas Grammar School boy, later used by Rev Philip Moore to note entrances and fees of scholars
Date(s): 1742-1752
Creator(s): Tiffin, John; Moore, Philip
Scope & Content: Tiffin practises his Latin in this notebook but also makes notes about his health. For example 'In the year 1742 October I had a severe cold which for the most part I got by fishing. When I was sick I had no other employment than coining of lead pennies'; 'January 28th I had the misfortune to be blown up with Gunpo (sic) and soon after had a most grevious fit of sickness which kept me in ... indeed was like to have cost me my life & besides all, was confined to my bed twelve days and lost the use of my limbs by reason of nothing passing through me for 7 or 8 days; although I took both quicksilver & gunpowder. But I had a complication of disorders'.
Another part of the notebook is written in a different hand and records fees and pupils entering the school, for instance; 'From Mr Gelling of Kamlork for his son 9s. Phil Cannels son entered, The two Master Heywoods entered Janary 12th 1746; Captain Bridisons (sic) son Will entered April 2nd 1746 - left midsummer 1750'. There is a list of 'Mr Moores Charity Boys' being Corlet, Cain, Corlet, Xtian, Phil Gelling, Corrin November 1749 and Chas Cain Feb 23rd 1750', 'Mr Philip Moore's Charity Boys June 24th 1752- Two Christians' widows sons, Bob Corlet widow's son, Gibby Quirk, Nick's son'.
Administration / Biographical History: John Tiffin was probably a nephew of Rev Philip Moore's wife according to A.W. Moore.
