Scope & Content: Handwritten essay on the existence of the Manx language and literature of the Island. Borrow considers the importance and use of carvals. The carval of Joseph, the carval of Gobalg, the carval of the Day of Judgement and the carval of the Evil Women are provided as examples. Written circa 1878. Also a typed transcription of the essay. Administration / Biographical History: George Borrow (1803-1881), a poet, author and linguist, diarised his visit to the Isle of Man (he was on Island from late August 1855 for 10 weeks). Borrw stayed with John Goldsmith at 5 Albert Terrace, Douglas.
