'The Constitutional Position of the Isle of Man in relation to the United Kingdom'

Scope & Content: Notes used in talk delivered to the Institute of Chartered Secretaries at the Empress Hotel, Douglas on Tuesday 12 January 1999. Doyle sets out the 'conventional' position, challenges to the 'conventional' position and points to consider over the future. He quotes salients extracts from various texts including the Kilbrandon Report and Professor StJ N Bates' 'Mountain Air lecture' (1998). He concludes 'We need to continue to examine aspects of greater autonomy and have regard to opportunities for constitutional advancement. We need to consider how to obtain more control over our external relations and external representation. Whatever we need we need to consider the position calmly, objectively and with our eyes firmly placed on the long term best interests of the Isle of Man'.

Administration / Biographical History: At the time of this presentation advocate David Doyle was a partner with Dickinson Cruickshank & Co., having been called to the Manx Bar in 1984. He was later sworn is as First Deemster and Clerk of the Rolls in December 2010, after the death of Mike Kerruish, having been Second Deemster since 2003. He stood down from the role of First Deemster in 2018 and returned to private practice.
