First World War internee Nis Baltzer inside an internment hut, Knockaloe Camp, Isle of Man

Scope & Content: On the glass plate is written 'Baltzer Office' and prisoner number 21657 - through comparison with the repatriation and hospital lists on the ICRC website it is possible to identify the subject as Nis Baltzer, who arrived at Knockaloe 8/10/15. He was transferred to Spalding 6/11/18. Red cross bureau number 1346. He appears on a 1914 list of prisoners, age shown as 55, home address shown as Apenrade, Schleswig [later Aabenraa after the 1920 Schleswig Plebiscite which transferred Prussian territory back to Denmark.] There is a marriage record from this town for a Nis Jacobsen Baltzer, ship's captain, born 1859 married in 1895.
