First World War Internee Frank Joseph Kummle, Knockaloe Camp, Isle of Man

Scope & Content: The identification as Frank Joseph Kummle is derived from the prisoner number 20882 which appears on the glass plate, and comparison with the repatriation lists on the ICRC website. Kummle's Red Cross information bureau number was 26723.

He first appears on a list of prisoners at Handforth Camp in January 1915. Home address 55 Sea View Terrace, Swansea. Born Pfaffenweiler, Baden. He appears on the 1911 census at the same address but his surname is spelled Kumle. His occupation was given as Hotel Waiter, and he was married to a local woman with one son. He appears on the 1921 census living at Court Herbert, Neath, employed by Sir Griffith Thomas as a butler. Place of birth Baden, Germany. Still described as married but wife not present. Sir Griffith Thomas was described in a local newspaper as a 'Liberal Unionist, a Churchman [and] Swansea's chief citizen.'
