First World War Internees, Jewish Camp Dining Room, Douglas Camp, Isle of Man

Date(s): ?1917

Scope & Content: Dining room of the Jewish camp.

Man at bottom right corner in Homburg hat would appear to be Henry Stern who is also in PG/7870/38972. The figure seated next to him has been identified by family members as Samuel Suss, born 2 December 1864 in Galicia - probably in or near Drohobycz, about 100km south of Lvov/Lviv, now in the Ukraine. His Hebrew name was Asher Lemmel and sometimes he was called Lemmel Suss. He died in 1942. Possibly identical with 3332 L.Suss in the Douglas Camp register.

NB the 'high table' with the Rabbis and senior officials of the camp. Also elaborate candelabra on table.
