Scope & Content: Mrs Sarah Christian of Sulby Glen interviewed by B.R.S. Megaw about cutting turf and her childhood. The interviewee talks about how, after the deaths of two relatives on 29 July and 29 October, she moved from Lhergy Rhenny to Sulby Glen; how Manx people pronounce the place names Lhergy Rhenny, Druidale, Corrody; how she was born in Douglas, on Murrays Road, raised in Corrody from the age of six months until her grandmother's death in 1909, and then moved to Lhergy Rhenny until 1929; her memories of farming in Corrody and Lhergy Rhenny by ploughing with horses, cutting with scythe or reaper, and the use of the threshing mill; cutting turf at Tholt-y-Will edge, part of Snaefell and the Manx pronunciation of Snaefell; how she and twenty others cut turf for three to four days on Snaefell and what they ate and drank whilst working; how turf was used in homes instead of coal or coke; how she heard people from Kirk Bride on May Day leave to cut turf at 4am; how the top sod was put back; how good turf was cut on Beinn-y-Phott and near the Bungalow; she talks about mining at Beinn-y-Phott and other mine pits; talks about a lone neighbour recently snowed up at the Creggans; her memories of the Creg siblings who lived at the Creg Mooar and the Kinrades at Killbregga and remembers the Kinrade house burning down in Sulby Glen during the First World War; she recalls the Sulby Glen chapel and Tholt-y-Will schoolhouse used by visitors during school holidays; how she used to wash wool; the spinning and knitting of stockings with weaving done at the Sulby mill; and she recalls the cost of stockings, flannel and blankets.
