The dissertation is an investigation into the life of Charlotte de la Trémouille, Countess of Derby focuses on her time on the Isle of Man and her relationship with the place and people. Chapters include: the role of upper class women during the seventeenth century; Charlotte's early life; the roles played by Charlotte and James during the Civil War prior to living on the isle of Man; the isle of man under the rule of James Stanley; Charlotte: a political pragmatist; the Manx Court; Charlotte: her life after the execution of James. In the appendix there is the family tree of Charlotte de la Trémouille plus information about the 8 children of Charlotte and James.
