Scope & Content: Photograph of Great Union Camera Obscura. The original Camera Obscura was built about 1887 towards the top of Douglas Head but was destroyed by fire shortly afterwards. The present building was erected lower down the headland in 1896. It is basically a darkroom with periscope reflecting light through lenses on to a mat surface.
