Launch of the model lugger 'Swift' at Port St Mary
Date(s): 25 November 1938
Creator(s): Isle of Man Examiner
Scope & Content: 'The lugger Swift CT 4. A model has already been made of the type of lugger which was in vogue up to the end of the seventies of the last century. This model was constructed by a skilled boat carpenter, Mr. John Gawne, of Fistard, Port St. Mary. A picture from a photograph is shown on plate 154. It is agreed by all nautical authorities who have examined it that the model is as perfect as it is possible for a model of its size to be. Every detail of rigging and deck-gear is seen. Even the bunks, binacle and pump are present, the mop, bucket and boat hook for the small boat, and the corks and floats for the nets. To construct it took the builder all his spare time for the best part of last year. Mr. Gawne has persistently declined to accept any remuneration for his magnificent gift.'
