Lieutenant Charles Campbell in front of the Fence (Open Gate), Douglas Camp Isle of Man

Scope & Content: Charles Mercer Campbell had seen previous service with the British South Africa Company in the Matabele War [?] of 1896 for which he received a campaign medal (information supplied by a relative). In this photo he can be seen wearing a medal ribbon on his tunic.

He was born in Liverpool in 1872. By the 1911 census he had returned to the UK, occupation: secretary. He was gazetted under General List as Lieutenant 29 October 1914, the entry stating 'late Lieutenant Bulawayo Field Force.'
