English-style Pieced Quilt
Date made: 1887
Maker: Kaighin, Christian
Description: An English-style pieced patchwork quilt with a pattern of squares and a lattice pattern of Turkey red cotton stripes and patchwork blocks of triangles and squares. The patchwork blocks are in a variety of cotton prints in a mix of plain and print cotton dress fabrics. The quilt is in a variety of colours, though predominantly red and white.
The quilt is backed with a white cotton sheet and is hand-quilted in a zig-zag quilting pattern using white cotton thread. The edges are bound with two straight lines of hand stitching, in white cotton thread. The quilt does not contain any filling. It has a handwritten inscription in ink in one corner which reads, 'Hugh Kaighin, Rhenass, Nov. 1887'.
This patchwork quilt was made either by Christian Kaighin or her mother in Rhenass, German in 1887 for Christian's brother, Richard Hugh Kaighin. The quilt was used by Hugh Kaighin at Kerrowglass, Michael and again in the 1980s-90s to cover vehicles in a garage during winter.
