A summer afternoon, Douglas promenade

Date made: 1888

Artist: Nicholson, John Miller

Description: This painting by the Manx artist John Miller Nicholson shows Douglas Promenade from the approximate former location of the Rendevouz Cafe, on the corner of Castle Street and Church Road, looking along Harris and Loch Promenades towards the Jubilee Clock Tower. The view shows several people (predominantly tourists) walking along the promenade. In the background a large plume of smoke is visible from an Isle of Man Steam Packet Company vessel about to depart.

The painting is executed in oils on canvas and signed by the artist in the bottom left hand corner.

The artist has managed to capture the warmth of a summer's afternoon, and depicts a number of Victorian holiday makers engaged in that most popular of pastimes, promenading; simply walking up and down along the seafront, enjoying the clean Manx air.
