Euterpe [later 'Star of India']

Date made: 1863

Artist: Tudgay, Frederick

Description: Painting of the iron built barque 'Euterpe' [later Star of India], built and launched in Ramsey shipyard, 14th November 1863.

Frederick Tudgay was a talented British ship portraitist active in the 19th century. Although not much is known about him, two of his works provide significant insight into Manx maritime history. In 1963, two oil paintings of Ramsey built ships - the Euterpe [Star of India] and the Ramsey - were donated to the Manx Museum. Both ships were launched from the same Ramsey shipyard in 1863. The Euterpe [Star of India] in particular represented an impressive achievement in Manx shipbuilding, and Tudgay’s paintings provide insight into what she might have looked like.

The Star of India now resides in San Diego, California, still afloat, as the world's oldest active sailing vessel - and has been turned into a maritime museum.
