The ship 'Ramsey'

Description: This iron ship was one of two built by Gibson, McDonald & Arnold at Ramsey, Isle of Man, for Wakefield, Nash & Co., Liverpool, and launched in August 1863. Its sister, 'Euterpe', followed in November that year. By February 1867 both had been sold to David Brown of London. 'Ramsey' was probably painted by Tudgay shortly afterwards, in port-broadside view. He had already painted 'Euterpe' in 1863 [object ref: 1963-0131] in starboard broadside, but it is not clear how they became a pair (of slightly different dimensions) well before presented to the Manx Museum in 1955. 'Ramsey' was wrecked on the Queensland coast of Australia in 1882. 'Euterpe' was re-rigged as a barque in 1901 to ship salmon from Alaska to California under San Francisco ownership, and was renamed 'Star of India' in 1906.
