Manx woollen skirt

Date made: 19th-early 20th century

Description: Plaid woollen skirt of blue, red and green (maybe yellow stained by blue).

Made by donor's mother, Mrs Christian, from an earlier garment for which the wool was spun by Mrs Gawne (their great-grandmother) of Ballafesson and woven by a Ballafesson weaver.

Fabric has a thread count of c.28 threads to the inch. The condition is rather poor but apparently little faded.

Approximate plan of warp: 60 blue, 5 'green', 9 red, 11 blue, 9 red, 5 'green'. Plan of weft: 60 blue, 6 'green', 8 red, 10 blue, 8 red, 6 'green'.

White cotton waistband and pearl button.
