Biography: Fred Cowley was the son of John Cowley, of Golden Meadow Mills, Castletown. He was a member of the Isle of Man Volunteers, and joined the Manx Service Company upon its formation. He travelled with the company to Salonika in northern Greece, where he saw action against the Bulgarian army. In October 1918 he was admitted to the 64th General Hospital at Salonika with malaria and influenza, and subsequently died there of pneumonia. (Image ref: PG/13743/10).
