Biography: Thomas McGrattan, a merchant sailor, was lost in the sinking by a U-boat of the SS Belgian Prince on 31 July 1917. In this incident, regarded as a war crime, the captain of the U-boat deliberately smashed up the ship's lifeboats, so that the crew had no chance of survival. McGrattan's body was washed ashore two months later. He left a widow and three young children at 15, Hope Street, Castletown. (Image ref: PG/13743/22).
