Biography: Second Lieutenant Philip Gell of Castletown was a member of the Isle of Man Volunteers and an officer in the Manx Service Company. He travelled with the company to Salonika, where it joined the 2nd battalion Cheshire Regiment, but he was invalided home from that theatre of operations with malaria. He was placed on light duties, serving with a reserve formation in Ireland, but he never succeeded in shaking off the disease and died at Fermoy, County Cork, on 5 September 1917.
